Two Live Performances as Free Concerts

"Worldwide: Japan Project" is a free concert produced by Montreux Jazz Festival Japan 2016, taking place on a special stage within the Ebisu Culture Festival.

The event is characterized by two distinct themes, each explored through a dedicated live performance. This time, the program is built around "Japanese Aesthetics" and "The Journey of Samba."

"JAPAN STAGE in TOKYO," themed "Japanese Aesthetics," is a reinterpretation of a stage that received a standing ovation at the "Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Festival 2016," Southern France’s largest music festival, now presented for a Japanese audience. It will feature a performance combining Jun Inoue's physical live painting, Kan Sano's emotional keyboard work, and Kazuhiro Kumagai's tap dance.

Furthermore, "100 Years of SAMBA," themed "The Journey of Samba," will delve into the history of samba. This year marks 100 years since the first recording of "samba," a music born in Rio de Janeiro. The song "Pelo Telefone" (By Telephone), recorded and released in 1916, is said to have established samba as a genre.

A special band, assembled to commemorate this journey of samba, will perform. The musical director is Goro Ito. Joining as a guest is Mayra Freitas, a musician from Brazil and the daughter of samba legend Martinho da Vila. Attendees can experience the beautiful music of samba, a fusion of African rhythms and European melodies that expresses both joy and sorrow.

The presenter is Gilles Peterson. Why not enjoy the artistic autumn with "Worldwide: Japan Project"?
