A Film Distinct from Previous James Brown Documentaries
James Brown, dubbed the "King of Funk," remains a profound influence on today's artists. His contributions to music are immeasurable, yet the story of his rise to stardom is not widely known. This film meticulously portrays the lesser-known facets of JB and the journey that led him to be called the "King of Funk."
Abandoned by his mother, James Brown endured a difficult childhood, shining shoes and working in a brothel before reigning over the music scene as "the hardest working man in show business."
This film delves into the multifaceted persona of JB, exploring his role as a civil rights activist, a businessman, and the groundbreaking artist who invented "funk." It is a passionate and invaluable visual chronicle, featuring unreleased footage, concert performances from his prime, and interviews with band members, associates, and artists inspired by him.
The director is Alex Gibney, who was approached by Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones to create this film. Gibney is a rising talent known for numerous socially conscious works, including the documentary 'Taxi to the Dark Side,' which won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for its depiction of American soldiers torturing an Afghan taxi driver to death. Gibney gained unprecedented access to materials from the James Brown Estate, which manages JB's rights, allowing him to unearth rare footage. This access enabled the creation of a documentary that stands apart from all previous films about James Brown.
Featuring rare, unreleased footage of his electrifying live performances, interviews with producer Mick Jagger and band members who knew him then, the astonishing documentary 'Mr. Dynamite: The King of Funk James Brown' premieres Saturday, June 18th at Kadokawa Cinema Shinjuku and other theaters nationwide.
