Who Said Finland Was a Sacred Land of Tango?
Chino, Dipi, and Pablo Greco are three Argentine tango musicians active in Buenos Aires. They dedicate their lives to tango and firmly believe it originated in Argentina. While many people, not just Argentines but across the globe, share this belief, one individual challenges this notion: Finnish master director Aki Kaurismäki. "Tango is music born in Finland." Kaurismäki and his fellow musicians are convinced of this.
Intrigued and unconvinced by this claim, the trio embarks on a journey to Finland to seek the truth. Encountering Finnish forests, lakes, and the radiant white nights, their Latin temperament makes them realize they've arrived in an unknown world. Through their interactions with the reserved, taciturn, yet subtly humorous Finns, who contrast sharply with them, they begin to connect with a different form of tango, distinct from their own.
A Beloved Story Woven by Beautiful Tango and Warm People
The film is directed by Vivian Blumenstein, who previously won numerous awards for "Dance for All," a work chronicling a dance school and young Black dancers in a Cape Town township, marking her debut as a feature documentary director. She has created works on diverse themes in various countries, including South Africa, India, Germany, Finland, and Argentina. "Tango of the White Nights" is her fourth feature-length documentary.
Set against the backdrop of Finland's stunning natural landscapes, the film depicts how two distinct cultures intertwine through the mediums of travel and tango, stimulating intellectual curiosity at times and offering heartwarming humor at others. The three travelers and the people awaiting their visit are all renowned musicians highly acclaimed in their respective homelands. Their endearing way of life is sure to bring a warm sense of inspiration to all who watch.
