Since its inception in 1998, the Red Bull Music Academy (RBMA) has supported avant-garde and creatively driven artists worldwide. We are now exclusively premiering the full 26-minute documentary, "LAYERED MEMORIES -searching for the sound with Yosi Horikawa-," featuring Japanese graduate Yosi Horikawa, on this page.

The Sound of Yosi Horikawa, Captivating the World



Yosi Horikawa is a unique sound creator who builds music by recording and editing environmental and everyday sounds. His debut EP, "Touch," released in 2009 by French label Eclectic Records, gained attention after being featured by a French state-run radio station. In 2010, he was invited to the "Off Courts" film festival in Trouville, France, where he was involved in producing his own music videos and film scores.

In 2011, he participated in RBMA Madrid, engaging in sessions with artists such as Dorian Concept, Anenon, and Threestyle.

In 2012, he performed at "Sonar Barcelona," a global festival for advanced music and new media art. His EP "Wandering," released that year, received acclaim from artists like DJ Food and Bonobo of Ninja Tune, garnering international attention.

In June 2013, he released his debut album "Vapor" on UK label First Word Records and embarked on a world tour. He performed at major festivals such as "Dimensions" and "Tauron Nowa Muzyka," as well as the renowned live stream channel "Boiler Room." The album "Vapor" was selected as "Best Album of 2013" by The Japan Times and various other publications. He also worked as a sound designer for architect Kengo Kuma's projects, showcasing his diverse activities.

Full Version of Film Recreating Yakushima's Vitality Through Sound Released Exclusively





The recently released "LAYERED MEMORIES -searching for the sound with Yosi Horikawa-" is a documentary chronicling Yosi Horikawa's long-held dream of field recording in Yakushima, Kagoshima Prefecture. It delves into his musical background, philosophy, and the creative process behind his tracks in his home studio, offering a comprehensive look at his artistic endeavors.

The recording for this film utilized 5.1ch surround sound (note: the video on this page is stereo 2.0ch output). At a recent screening event, multiple speakers were set up in the venue, allowing attendees to experience Yakushima's world as Yosi Horikawa perceived it, with an immersive sense of presence. The documentary concludes with a live performance of "YOGGO," a track that recreates the sounds of Yakushima's ancient cedar trees, wildlife, and natural environment.
