A New Desert Experience
If you're seeking a sunset experience distinct from the usual desert safari, a new tour called "Platinum Heritage" can fulfill that wish. Until now, the standard itinerary involved a 4WD drive (usually a Toyota Land Cruiser) over challenging dunes, followed by a camel ride to watch the sunset, and dinner in a Bedouin style while enjoying a belly dance performance. This was the typical package.
Platinum Heritage offers a drive in a classic open-top Land Rover. The experience concludes with a natural planetarium show. The tour is marketed as an "elevated luxury tour." After being picked up from the heart of Dubai, you'll be transported to a protected area (the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve) inhabited by unique desert wildlife. From there, you'll switch to a rare 1950s Land Rover for your journey into the desert.
Unlike the dune-bashing adventures, this journey proceeds elegantly across the desert to a small dune carpeted with rugs, where chilled drinks await (it's not a mirage). Before sunset, there's a falconry show featuring the UAE's national bird. Opportunities to see falcons this up close are rare, and you'll find yourself captivated by the majestic bird's agile movements.
To conclude the day, dinner is served at a camp meticulously recreating the lifestyle of the Bedouin nomads of the desert. The dinner is accompanied by a traditional Bedouin welcome dance. As the camp is an authentic recreation, alcohol is not served. However, there are live demonstrations of Arabian coffee brewing, henna (natural temporary body art that fades in about a week), and Arabic bread making. Camels are also waiting nearby, ensuring there's no shortage of entertainment. After dinner, many guests relax on cushions, enjoying shisha while watching the performance.
After marveling at the beautiful starry sky, you return to your Dubai hotel, just as the dry day (no alcohol) concludes. Enjoying a glass of bubbly (beer or champagne) at the hotel bar marks the end of a packed Dubai itinerary.
