The canned mackerel boom began around 2013. It gained popularity for its rich nutrients and convenience, and in 2018, canned mackerel surpassed canned tuna in production volume to become the most popular canned fish.
Canned foods are versatile, serving as preserved foods, snacks, and side dishes. Among them, blue fish cans are attracting attention as health foods due to their high nutritional value.
Blue fish cans are rich in DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), known as essential fatty acids. While the DHA content is similar in both canned mackerel and sardines, canned sardines contain more EPA (※2), a nutrient that promotes the secretion of DLP-1 (※1) in the body.
"Shokusai Club Hokkaido Sardine Boiled in Water" uses "Nemuro Nanasei," sardines inhabiting the waters off Nemuro, Hokkaido. Caught from early May to August, they are characterized by their large size and high fat content. They are such a prized brand that they are also used as sashimi and sushi toppings, where the flavor cannot be masked.
After being caught, the sardines are kept fresh and then hand-finished with only water and salt from Soya, without any additional seasoning, to create a simple product.
While delicious eaten as is, it's also recommended to use the canning liquid in cooking. Additionally, a video featuring arrangement recipes using these canned sardines by popular chef YouTuber ChefRopia is now available. We highly recommend checking it out.
