EAT | Limited Edition by Vik Muniz for Perrier-Jouët

EAT | Special Champagne Tasting and Lunch Held at Kyoto's Tofuku-ji Temple

Perrier Jouët Limited Edition by Vik Muniz

Since its founding in 1811, Champagne house Perrier Jouët has continued to craft elegant, floral wines with unparalleled finesse—a result of their focus on high-quality Chardonnay. While famously known for the anemone motif by Émile Gallé adorning its bottles, a tasting and lunch were held at the Rinzai Zen temple, Tofuku-ji in Kyoto, to commemorate the limited release of the 2005 vintage rosé, "Perrier Jouët Belle Epoque Rosé 2005 Limited Edition," designed by Brazilian contemporary artist Vik Muniz.

Japanese Anemones Meet Brazil's Modern Hummingbird

The elegance of the cuvée resonates with the elegance of the Art Nouveau anemone flowers adorning the "Belle Epoque" bottle. There are countless ways to praise the Champagne house Perrier Jouët, but when discussing the venerable maison founded in Epernay in 1811, the anemone by Émile Gallé gracing its bottles is often mentioned first, alongside its exceptional taste.

Regarding the newly released "Perrier Jouët Belle Epoque Rosé 2005 Limited Edition," Tim Peck, President of Pernod Ricard Japan, stated, "Perrier Jouët resonates with and respects the work of Vik Muniz, an artist known as a 'low-tech illusionist' who focuses on everyday materials like sugar, junk, and honey to savor life's moments. This shared philosophy led to this collaboration."

The "Belle Epoque Rosé 2005" bottle features a collaboration between the Japanese anemone (a Japanese autumn anemone) drawn over a century ago by Émile Gallé, and a golden hummingbird drawn by the contemporary Brazilian artist. This meeting of different artists, eras, and motifs is realized on the bottle.

Pale Salmon Pink "Rosé" Unveiled at Kyoto's Tofuku-ji Temple

At the Champagne tasting and lunch held at Tofuku-ji Temple in Kyoto, Tim Peck remarked, "We are honored to unveil this special Champagne, 'Perrier Jouët Belle Epoque Rosé 2005 Limited Edition,' created with the renowned Brazilian artist Vik Muniz, in the historic and spiritual setting of Tofuku-ji. Please enjoy the collaboration between Kyoto's finest cuisine and Perrier Jouët."

Hervé Deschamps, the Cellar Master who traveled to Japan for this event, elaborated on the "Perrier Jouët Belle Epoque Rosé 2005 Limited Edition": "2005 was a year of unusual weather, with a very cold winter and a rainy summer. Because we were able to produce excellent Chardonnay that year, we anticipated creating a sophisticated, floral, and light rosé. We decided to focus solely on rosé for 2005, resulting in this beautiful, pale salmon pink vintage. The 2005 vintage rosé is the most vibrant and sensorially stimulating Champagne in the Belle Epoque collection."

Hervé continued, "First, please enjoy the aroma of the 2005 vintage rosé. It releases an elegant and fruity aroma with notes of strawberry, citrus, sour cherry, and orange, complemented by cream and spice. Then, please taste it. The attack is fresh, with flavors reminiscent of orange confit, white peach, and cocoa stimulating the senses, leading to a rich and mellow finish. Upon tasting, you will experience the complexity and rich depth of Pinot Noir. Please enjoy the light, 'paradise pleasure' of a hummingbird."

The lunch was prepared by Stephan Pantel, owner and chef of "Stephan Pantel" in Kyoto, renowned for his "Foie Gras Confit with Nara-zuke Pickle Wrap." The chef's masterful pairings with the rosé, including the Perrier Jouët Belle Epoque Rosé 2005 Limited Edition, created a superb harmony with the Tofuku-ji location, Kyoto's flavors, and Perrier Jouët's rosé.
