Why The Macallan is the Ultimate Luxury (1)
An event celebrating the arrival of "The Masters of Photography Mario Testino Edition" in Japan was held on October 10th on the 52nd floor rooftop of Andaz Tokyo. We introduce scenes from the party, featuring an interview with Ken, the brand director of "The Macallan," and actress Rinko Kikuchi, along with fashion photographer Mario Testino.

The Fusion of Fashion and Single Malt
The "Master of Photography" (hereafter MOP) series has previously seen four editions released through collaborations with renowned photographers such as Annie Leibovitz and Elliott Erwitt.
This fifth installment features work by the globally acclaimed fashion photographer Mario Testino, with "The Masters of Photography Mario Testino Edition" being released in a limited run of 80 sets.
The launch event was held on the 52nd floor of Andaz Tokyo. The venue was filled with guests from the fashion industry, as well as celebrities and models. Everyone held glasses of "The Macallan" cocktails or enjoyed it on the rocks.
At the event, following a photo session with Mario Testino and Rinko Kikuchi, who arrived on the black carpet, a talk session was held with Ken, the brand director of "The Macallan." A short film created for MOP was also screened. It was an "ultra-luxury" night filled with the essence of "The Macallan" at a new Tokyo landmark.
The Macallan Brand Director Speaks on Its Special Taste
At the event, we had the opportunity to interview Ken, the brand director of "The Macallan." He shared insights into the appeal of his brand's whisky, often referred to as the "Rolls-Royce of single malts."
"The Macallan holds a distinct position compared to other whiskies. This is because it is a handcrafted whisky that upholds traditional methods and maintains high quality."
Sherry casks are what give The Macallan its unique character. We place such importance on flavor that we purchase approximately 95% of all sherry casks traded globally, which illustrates our dedication to crafting our whisky.
The Macallan has a commitment to its manufacturing process, known as the Six Pillars. These are: 'Easter Elchies House,' 'unique small spirit stills,' 'finest new spirit,' 'exceptional oak casks,' 'natural colour,' and 'unparalleled craftsmanship.' This MOP edition was created in homage to these Six Pillars.
For this edition, the Six Pillars are represented by six individual casks, each inspired by the personalities of the six individuals photographed by Mario Testino. The cask numbers all contain the digit '6,' such as cask number 66 from 2000, cask number 666 from 2001, cask number 66 from 2003, cask number 6 from 1998, cask number 126 from 1996, and cask number 6 from 1997.
Each of these casks embodies keywords such as the origin of The Macallan, mystery, citrusy spirit freshness, spicy and rich cask aroma, beautiful natural color, and balance. This results in a taste truly befitting the term "ultra-luxury."
I personally enjoy The Macallan 18 Year Old daily, and a dram enjoyed at a Japanese bar is particularly special. I favor drinking it on the rocks with an ice ball meticulously carved by a skilled bartender. Its characteristic slow melting keeps the whisky perfectly chilled while enhancing its flavor.

Why The Macallan is the Ultimate Luxury (2)
Actress Rinko Kikuchi on "Whisky and I"
My interview with Rinko Kikuchi left me with the impression of someone who truly appreciates whisky. She understands not just how to drink a special single malt, but also how to spend quality time with it, embodying the sophistication of an adult who knows how to savor life's pleasures.
"When I was in my teens, my image of whisky was that of a gentleman's drink. As I began to drink it myself, my perception shifted to that of a drink for quiet contemplation. I enjoy it when I want to share a beautiful moment with someone close. That's my image of single malt.
The Macallan, in particular, is a whisky that evokes a sense of elegance, romance, and history. Furthermore, the poetic perspective on MOP, as mentioned by Ken earlier, along with its unique qualities distinct from wine and its vintage appeal, all contribute to The Macallan's charm.
My first experience with single malt was The Macallan, and I remember its exceptionally refined taste. The way bartenders handle the bottles is also very careful, and they are often placed in prominent, high positions, which I believe reflects The Macallan's positioning.
I usually opt for on the rocks at bars, but when I'm enjoying an old vintage or a rare single malt, I sometimes drink it neat. While I share these moments with various people, from elders to friends, the common thread is quietly appreciating the whisky's flavor as time passes. A cherished whisky is an indispensable companion for spending time with loved ones."
