The Stunning "Gunjo no Ma" Room, Filled with Taisho Modern Ambiance

"Tsujiteien," considered a masterpiece of modern Japanese gardens, is said to have been designed by the pioneer of modern garden design, "Ueji," also known as the seventh generation Jihei Ogawa, who also worked on Tsubaki-yama-so (Prince Yamagata Aritomo's villa) and Heian Shrine. Within its vast 6,600-square-meter grounds lies a strolling garden that incorporates naturalistic elements, borrowing scenery such as waterfalls. It offers a superb vantage point overlooking Kanazawa city, mountains, and rivers, yet it had been, in principle, closed to the public until now.

Novarese, a company that handles wedding venues nationwide, has renovated "Tsujiteien," a nationally registered tangible cultural property located within the garden, which conveys the Taisho modern atmosphere. It opened as a teahouse in December. Furthermore, starting in January, a private dining service for one group per night will also commence.

The main residence, which serves as the dining and tea space, is a magnificent mansion building with a Taisho modern flair, one of the largest in Kanazawa. While the exterior remains unchanged, the interior retains its splendid architectural elements. Four of the ten rooms have been renovated into dining spaces, creating seating for 60 across 17 tables. The "Gunjo no Ma" room, accommodating six to eight people and functioning as a "private dining room," features a striking, deep blue painted wall made of lazurite. While preserving its unique atmosphere, comfortable sunken kotatsu seating has been installed.

At the teahouse, Shinsuke Tamada, who honed his skills after learning the essence of Japanese cuisine at restaurants like "Kobe Tamura," has been appointed as the head chef. He will entertain guests with creative Japanese sweets that evoke a sense of local flavor, made with vegetables from Kaga and Noto. In the evenings, refined and high-quality kaiseki cuisine will be served. In the future, wedding services utilizing the garden are also planned.

In the coming seasons, visitors can admire the beautiful nature that changes with the seasons, such as the Japanese camellias that bloom with red flowers amidst the snow. "Tsujiteien ~Former Maeda Clan Chief Retainer Yokoyama Family Guest House~" promises to convey a new charm of Kanazawa. It is poised to become a new spot that will impress even Kanazawa connoisseurs.
