Sustainable Packaging 'Second Skin'

Ruinart, the world's oldest Champagne House, renowned for its creativity and innovation, has unveiled its sustainable packaging, 'Second Skin,' which is plastic-free and 100% recyclable, reflecting a commitment to environmental consciousness. Developed over two years, this new packaging is designed exclusively for Ruinart Blanc de Blancs and Ruinart Rosé.

Scheduled for Release in Japan in Spring 2021

MHD Moët Hennessy Diageo, the distributor of Champagne House Ruinart, announced the new sustainable packaging for Ruinart Blanc de Blancs and Ruinart Rosé, 'Second Skin,' developed over two years, at the VINEXPO Paris exhibition (the world's largest international wine and spirits fair) held from February 10th to 12th, 2020.

This packaging, which is nine times lighter than the existing gift box and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 60%, will be gradually rolled out in Western Europe starting in winter 2020. In Japan, it is scheduled for release in spring 2021.
Founded in 1729, Ruinart is the oldest Champagne House, and since its inception, it has boldly innovated, becoming the first maison to introduce rosé Champagne to the market in 1764.
Furthermore, Ruinart was the first Champagne House to utilize the ancient Roman chalk quarries, located 38 meters below ground, known as 'Crayères,' which provide ideal conditions for aging its wines. In 1896, the maison commissioned Alphonse Mucha, a leading Art Nouveau artist from the Czech Republic, for its advertising campaign, marking the first collaboration between a Champagne House and an artist.
Additionally, in 1769, Ruinart was the first to use wooden cases for transporting bottles. Building on this pioneering spirit, Ruinart has now developed the environmentally conscious sustainable packaging, 'Second Skin.'
This 'Second Skin' is a 100% recyclable package meticulously crafted from natural wood fibers, sourced from sustainably managed European forests.
Being completely plastic-free, it is nine times lighter than the previous gift box and has successfully reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 60%.
The 'Second Skin' represents a new step in the maison's comprehensive development approach, which considers the environment at every stage of meticulous Champagne production, from the vine to the tasting, encompassing packaging, serving tools, and presentation.
Maison Ruinart's environmentally conscious product development plays a significant role within the Champagne industry.
Beyond its environmental considerations, the 'Second Skin' boasts a design that embodies Ruinart's unique dedication. Its chalk-like texture, reminiscent of the 'Crayères' Champagne cellars, is achieved through deep, luxurious, and delicate embossing.
Achieving a perfectly precise, one-piece contour that hugs the bottle required over two years of development, involving seven prototypes and various papermaking techniques. The absence of sharp edges is realized through a specialized processing technology, developed exclusively for Ruinart, which uses precise high-pressure water jets to cut the bottle's outline.
This not only imparts a unique elegance but also allows the packaging to follow the bottle's iconic curves, ensuring its perfect preservation until the moment Ruinart is enjoyed.
The 'Second Skin' will gradually replace the current gift boxes, with a rollout beginning in Western Europe in winter 2020. In Japan, it is scheduled for release in spring 2021, so please look forward to it.
Frédéric Dufour, President of Maison Ruinart, commented, "This Second Skin case underscores Maison Ruinart's role as a pioneer in Champagne and our strong commitment to fulfilling our responsibilities to society and the environment. This groundbreaking project embodies the maison's firm dedication to developing more sustainable packaging at every stage of product development and marketing, from tending the vines to the consumer experience."
