Talk Event Also Held on Sunday, March 10th, from 2:00 PM to 2:30 PM
My child is almost two years old, and I started making tableware for my daughter when I realized there wasn't much available that I wanted her to use.
This shallow, small bowl, slightly rounded for easy scooping with a spoon, allows my daughter to eat both udon and rice without spilling, and she seems happy using it. Many of my peers are currently raising young children. Most of them are making tableware for their own kids. So, I thought, why not create an opportunity for the general public to purchase these pieces! That's why I decided to organize this exhibition for the first time.
My only request to each artist was to “create with their own child in mind.” They could use their usual style, or it would be interesting if they developed a completely new style for children. As a result, nearly half of the artists presented new styles that hadn't been seen before. I myself drew animals my daughter could name – “elephant, giraffe, cat” – on my pieces, imagining her delighted face, and had a lot of fun creating them.
I believe many parents might consider ceramic tableware too dangerous for children. While I can't say it's entirely risk-free as it can break, I think learning that objects break when thrown or hit is also part of the process of becoming accustomed to using tableware.
Including my own outreach, a total of 18 artists have gathered for this exhibition. While primarily ceramic artists, we also have participants from woodworking, lacquerware, paper, and confectionery fields, and with everyone's contribution, we've truly created a delightful exhibition. Although it's a tableware exhibition, I believe it will be an enjoyable experience for children too. It would bring me immense joy if children could actually pick up the pieces themselves and use the ones they like. I would be honored if you could visit with your families.
Additionally, a talk event titled “Child-Rearing x Ceramics” will be held on Sunday, March 10th, from 2:00 PM to 2:30 PM, featuring Yuko Okazaki, Tomoko Tsuda, Mayumi Nakamura, Junko Yamamoto, and others.
