The Resonant Works of Two Photographers, Connected by Satoru Machiguchi

Match and Company is the design office headed by art director Satoru Machiguchi. While also a design office handling graphic design across various fields, it is also known for producing and releasing numerous photobooks by young Japanese photographers since the 1990s. Furthermore, its commitment to thoroughly engaging with creators as a publisher and distributor has earned high praise, and its photobooks, born from a strong dedication to paper and printing, have garnered support from many collectors in Europe and America.

And now, Match and Company presents two new photobooks by Japan's leading photographers. "Dazai," created by Daido Moriyama as an homage to the novelist Osamu Dazai, was released last autumn in Paris at "PARIS PHOTO 2014" under Match and Company's "MMM" label. It features selected monochrome works by Moriyama from the 1970s to the present, along with Dazai's representative short story, "Villon's Wife."

Meanwhile, Mika Ninagawa's photobook is a joint publication by the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art and Match and Company, serving as the catalog for the exhibition "Mika Ninagawa: Self-image," which runs until May 10 (Sunday) at the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art in Shinagawa. This photobook reveals a different side of Ninagawa, capturing not only the vibrancy and sense of happiness but also the distortions, murkiness, and shadows of decline that lie alongside them.
