Featuring Bento from Diverse Guest Lecturers

From June to December 2012, for about six months, ‘Oishii Kyoshitsu’ unfolded at Club Hillside, operated by Hillside Terrace in Daikanyama, with Toyama joined by a diverse lineup of guest lecturers. The book, ‘Bento to Show Off’, recreates this unique course where participants learned about bento while experiencing the joy of eating and creativity firsthand.

The course featured guests from a wide range of fields, including creators and chefs. Keisuke Matsushima, head chef of Restaurant I, presented ‘Bento for the French’; graphic designer Taku Satoh proposed ‘Yin and Yang’; and scriptwriter and broadcast writer Kunihiko Koyama offered ‘Surprise!’. Each session had a theme, and all participants brought their own bento, utilizing their creativity and ideas based on that theme.

This book features 100 selected bento boxes, chosen from over 200 created during ‘Oishii Kyoshitsu’, alongside unique bento by Toyama and guest lecturers. It also introduces 7 categories of distinctive bento, such as ‘Sushi We Want to Eat Together’, ‘Sandwich is Beautiful’, and ‘Exotic Flavors, Ethnic Bento’.

Bento, eaten after a certain time has passed since preparation, requires comprehensive consideration of the eater's feelings and the environment. The story behind each bento, along with ideas embedded in the containers, wrapping, and more, enhances its deliciousness. This book is a distillation of the charm of bento.
