Vik Muniz, Who Created Works During a Residency at the Maison at Ruinart's Invitation

Founded in 1729, Ruinart is the world's oldest Champagne house. It is renowned for its Champagne, praised as "the art of Chardonnay," characterized by its delicate, fresh, and rich rounded taste achieved through the skillful selection of the highest quality grapes harvested from the Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims, pursuing "purity," "delicacy," and "elegance."
As a maison with such a long history, its ties to art are also deep. In 1896, it commissioned Alphonse Mucha, a leading figure of Art Nouveau, to create an advertising poster, which captivated the public.

Since 2000, to convey the brand's nature and values, Ruinart has collaborated with cutting-edge artists of the time. In recent years, it has hosted an annual "Artist in Residence" program where artists stay at the maison for a period to create their works.

This year's invited artist is Vik Muniz, a contemporary artist from Brazil who transforms natural materials into magnificent works. He began studying art at a night school on a scholarship from the age of 14 and is now known for his diverse activities, including raising funds for social welfare projects through collaborations with various luxury brands and establishing a school to teach audiovisual technology to young people living in the slums of Rio de Janeiro.

At Ruinart's invitation, he stayed at the maison. Together with Frédéric Panaiotis, Ruinart's Cellar Master, Muniz visited the chalk quarries of Sillery, located on the hills of Reims. Vik learned that the Champagne region has a very challenging climate for growing grapes and that it takes a long time to produce Ruinart.

Having learned about the long process required to create Ruinart, he captured the connection between humans and nature, creating works that express the vine trunks using black-dyed wood chips and charcoal. These works will now be exhibited in Tokyo.

Witness the world of Ruinart as depicted by the magician of art, Vik Muniz. We invite you to experience this special encounter with the essence of Ruinart and witness the collaborative works born from this unique experience.
