Exploring the Core of 90s British Art That Captivated the World, from the Tate Collection

— "Tate Modern – YBA & BEYOND: 90s British Art That Changed the World" at The National Art Center, Tokyo

Meanwhile, "Tate Modern – YBA & BEYOND: 90s British Art That Changed the World," held at The National Art Center, Tokyo, offers a multifaceted look at the innovative artistic creations of 1990s Britain. The exhibition runs until May 11.

This exhibition focuses on British art created from the late 1980s to the early 2000s.

Amidst the tense social climate of Britain during the Thatcher era (1979-1990), a significant transformation in contemporary British art occurred with the emergence of artists known as the "Young British Artists" (YBA). They challenged existing artistic frameworks and engaged in experimental practices in their creation and exhibition of works.

Their contemporaries also contributed to this era, exploring themes of popular culture, personal narratives, and societal changes. Using diverse mediums such as painting, sculpture, photography, video, and installation, they produced original works that left a lasting impact.

The exhibition, drawing primarily from the Tate Collection, features approximately 100 works by 58 artists. It examines the decisive influence of the creative fervor of that era on the global art scene.

Works by internationally renowned artists such as Damien Hirst, Francis Bacon, and Julian Opie are also on display. This exhibition offers an opportunity to experience firsthand the revolutionary movements in subculture, music, and fashion that defined 90s Britain.

Haruomi Hosono and Asuka Saito have been appointed as ambassadors for this exhibition. They will guide visitors through the charms of 90s British art via audio guides and other formats.

Following its run at The National Art Center, Tokyo, "Tate Modern – YBA & BEYOND: 90s British Art That Changed the World" is scheduled to tour to the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art from Wednesday, June 3, to Sunday, September 6.
