A photography exhibition by the fashion photographer Guy Bourdin, "The Absurd and The Sublime Guy Bourdin," will be held at Chanel Nexus Hall from Wednesday, September 8, 2021, to Sunday, October 24, 2021.

A collection of fashion photographs evoking a surreal sense of narrative.
Guy Bourdin was born in Paris in 1928. Inspired by art, he experimented with painting and drawing, beginning his career as a painter. He then started taking photographs in the late 1940s.
In 1951, he met Man Ray and was greatly influenced by Surrealist works. At the same time, captivated by the films of Alfred Hitchcock, he presented photographs that drew viewers in with meticulously constructed scenes, evoking mysterious plots and creating subconscious tension.
His unique storytelling style garnered attention, and his fashion photographs were first published in the February 1955 issue of French Vogue. In addition to fashion magazines, he also created advertisements for brands including Chanel. His work has been exhibited at institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, Tate Modern, the Jeu de Paume, and the Getty Museum. In 2006, Bourdin's first exhibition in Japan was held at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum.
Guy Bourdin's work consistently plays with the fine line between the absurd and the sublime, always possessing an element of surprise. Through his meticulously composed images, he elevated fashion photography to a superior art form. This exhibition features not only his iconic works but also original prints from his valuable archives that have never been displayed before. His early experiments and the evolution of his distinctive style can be seen in the monochrome vintage photographs. These works exemplify Bourdin's creative process and shed light on his fascination with enigmatic imagery and surrealist cinema.
