Marianne Mueller is well-known for her extensive body of work created over 20 years in her studio, all collected under the title 'Archive.' She seeks to rediscover new images and combinations by revisiting and re-examining her vast archive. For 'SOU-SOU,' her first solo exhibition in Japan, she embarks on a new endeavor.
The current solo exhibition, 'SOU-SOU,' is conceived with inspiration drawn from the venue's unique spatiality, presenting an installation-style exhibition that explores expression within a space contrasting with traditional white cube galleries. Furthermore, it reflects Japanese spatiality and craftsmanship, alongside contrasting elements such as Eastern and Western cultures, tradition and modernity, and the private and public. Utilizing not only video and sound works, and photographs as components of the exhibition, but also Japanese elements like tabi socks and tatami mats, it presents the relationship between matter and space, engaging the viewer's sight, hearing, and perception.
The latest publication, 'STAIRS ETC,' contains a vast collection of images of designed and crafted objects that surround our daily lives, drawn from her archive. Mueller's keen eye captures seemingly trivial or valueless items, presenting photographs of ordinary objects laid out across double-page spreads. These are then categorized into simple sections like chairs, tables, and fountains, creating an illusion akin to browsing an encyclopedia.
During the exhibition, a pop-up store by Edition Patrick Frey, a Swiss publisher known for its high-quality art books, will also be held. A closing party and a talk event featuring the artist and guests will take place on Sunday, February 1st.
