ART│A Mural by Japanese Artist KAMI, Inspired by Haring, Appears in Yatsugatake
Yamanashi Prefecture Hosts "Keith Haring Muralism: Dancing at a Wall Vol.1 KAMI"
A new special exhibition is being held at the Nakamura Keith Haring Museum in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, an area known for its art spaces dedicated to Keith Haring (1958-1990). The mural exhibition "Keith Haring Muralism: Dancing at a Wall Vol.1 KAMI," featuring artist KAMI, who inherits Haring's muralism, is on display until early August.
Murals with a Sense of Physical Movement Emerge on the Yatsugatake Landscape
Keith Haring, who first gained recognition for his "graffiti" in subway stations, his subway drawings, began creating murals in 1982. He continued to produce murals worldwide, including on the Berlin Wall that divided East and West Germany, and in Melbourne, Australia, and Pisa, Italy.
Murals held a special significance for him. From socially charged works like "Crack is Wack," conveying the message that "crack is whack," to collaborations with contemporary graffiti artists and children, mural creation was Haring's point of contact with the public and, like his subway drawings, his ultimate medium of communication.
This exhibition is curated by "en one tokyo," which handles various projects in the street scene, including at the Gallery Common in Harajuku. Japanese artists who inherit Keith Haring's muralism will create murals on approximately 100 meters of temporary construction hoarding.
The first phase of this exhibition, held in two parts, features the work of KAMI, an artist active both domestically and internationally, who was an original member of the New York-based artist collective "BARNSTORMERS" starting in 2000. Murals by KAMI, a pioneer of the Japanese street art scene, imbued with a sense of physical movement, emerge on the Yatsugatake landscape.
KAMI states, "How can we play with the environment and reality we live in? I believe that's the essence of street culture. Keith Haring's captivating art form, born from playing with all his might, embodies the era in which he lived, and his style remains etched in our memories with a solid impact." We wish to experience the new wave created when KAMI's artistic flow, born from everyday city life, interacts with the grand nature of Yatsugatake.
