Crafts that leverage artisanal skill, and indeed crafts in general, are increasingly recognized for their value as everyday items produced through sustainable manufacturing, deeply connected to the climate and culture of their regions.

Takaoka, with over 400 years of history as a "city of manufacturing," has long focused on crafts, from traditional metalwork and lacquerware to its aluminum industry. The "Craft City Takaoka Craft Competition" has been held here since 1986. This year, we once again invite submissions from across the country for new crafts that strike at the heart of the craft domain.

We offer two top prizes: the "Factory Craft Grand Prix" (¥800,000 prize money), seeking everyday items that are highly competitive as products while utilizing materials with excellent practicality and marketability; and the "Contemporary Craft Grand Prix" (¥800,000 prize money), seeking challenging expressions that expand the realm of craft and artistry with high creativity and originality. Additionally, there are two Excellence Awards (¥300,000 prize money each) and five Jury Encouragement Awards (¥100,000 prize money each).

The Takaoka Craft Competition, considered a gateway for emerging artists, has seen past Grand Prix winners such as Ryota Aoki (ceramics), Noa Hanyu (woodwork), and SHIMOO DESIGN (woodwork).
