Experiencing Art in the "Ultimate State"
Since the opening of a sauna in Mifuneyama Rakuen, Kyushu, in 2019 (which won the Sauna Shuran award for two consecutive years in 2019 and 2020), the art collective teamLab has been exploring new experiences of art and sauna through exhibitions such as "teamLab, the Land of the Gods" and "teamLab: Ruins and Resilence," while also delving into their historical context.
The alternating hot and cold baths, repeating cycles of sauna and cold water immersion, are said to bring about a state of "totono-i," where the senses are sharpened. By utilizing this unique state, the aim is for visitors to experience art with their "ultimate senses."
This exhibition features multiple works, including new pieces based on teamLab's new art project, "Supernature Phenomenon."
"Supernature Phenomenon" is a project themed around "supernatural phenomena" that transcend the laws of nature, and the resulting changes in perception itself. Simply observing supernatural phenomena, such as defying gravity, alters people's perception, leading them to a "state different from the everyday."
The venue is divided into sauna rooms, an art bathing area, and a cold water shower area. By moving between these spaces, visitors can experience the ultimate art sauna.
Among the novel works are "The Infinite Crystal World," where countless crystal-like objects float, ascend, descend, and sometimes pause, and "Resonating Spheres," where spheres float and gently repeat up-and-down movements.
There are a total of seven sauna rooms, including a women-only sauna. With a combination of temperatures and humidity levels, from moderately warm and humid to extremely hot and dry, it can be enjoyed by both sauna beginners and enthusiasts.
Each sauna room offers a different experience with natural aromas such as birch, juniper, pine, and ginger, as well as hojicha tea, and various environmental sounds and music like crackling fire, cave rivers, suikinkutsu (water harp), forest winds, flames, and pink noise. With staff-led löyly sessions, it functions fully as a sauna.
The cold water bath is equipped with a chiller to maintain a constant cool temperature in the showers. Showerheads, 30cm in diameter, are installed in two locations: overhead and at shoulder level. The cold water area is also part of the artwork, allowing immersion in the art even while cleansing the body.
