A "smash" through art that breaks down common perceptions and fixed ideas.
Tokyo Art Meeting, which contemplates contemporary art with a different approach each year, focuses on "Design" this year. This exhibition presents design and art as "How to Touch the World (Design)," not as "forms" endlessly created for market expansion, but as expressions that make us aware of issues around us and suggest new directions for thought.
Participating in the exhibition are Yuko Hasegawa, Chief Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, and Hiroshi Kashiwagi, a leading figure in design history research, as co-curators. Also joining as advisors are Taku Satoh, a graphic designer active in diverse fields from product design to children's educational programming, and Hiroshi Ishii, Associate Director of the MIT Media Lab, who offers insights into the future of design from cutting-edge technology.
The venue showcases works by 21 domestic and international artists, designers, and architects who translate various events and topics in contemporary society, from the global economy to genetics, into tangible forms. Among them are Daito Manabe, known for his cool data visualizations and work on Perfume's concert visuals, and Sputniko!, who proposes possible future scenarios through new technological devices and objects presented in installations and videos, sparked by simple questions.
This exhibition invites us into a wonderland, delivering a "smash" to conventional views and fixed ideas, much like Alice tumbling into a fantastical world while chasing a rabbit.
