A Modern Portrait of Elizabeth II: Collaboration with Light

Chris Levine, a light artist of Canadian origin, is active based in London. After graduating from Central Saint Martins, he began creating "light art" works that fuse light and art. He shapes light and images with new technologies, crafting novel sensory experiences.

The exhibition title, "3.142," also carries a profound meaning. "If the center of truth in physics is 'geometry,' then the shape of a 'circle' represents purity, simplicity, and truth. We too stand on a large sphere – the 'Earth.' Pi, '3.142,' therefore signifies truth. For me, creative work is about making things understandable and drawing out their inherent meaning. I feel this is close to the purity of a circle. '3.142,' representing the circle, is a metaphor for my creativity," explains Levine.

In 2004, he was selected to photograph a hologram of Queen Elizabeth II. The shoot took place amidst intense, dazzling light, requiring an eight-second exposure for each shot, during which the subject had to remain perfectly still. To capture the Queen's serene expression, the resulting photograph depicted her with eyes closed, as if in meditation. This marked the first holographic portrait of Elizabeth II. This series of 3D portraits, considered one of the most iconic images of the 20th century, catapulted Chris Levine to fame as an artist.

The exhibition features works and installations created using various mediums and light technologies, including lasers, LEDs, lenses, lightboxes, photography, and his first silk screen prints. Portraits of singer Grace Jones and model Kate Moss, who have appeared as subjects, are also on display. Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the "light" art that stimulates the visual senses.
