Tokyo, Paris, New York Under a Sky Full of Stars
Born in France in 1963, Thierry Cohen is based in Paris. He began his career as a professional photographer in his early twenties, with works exhibited at institutions such as the Palais de Tokyo and the Musée de l'Homme. In 2010, he launched "Darkened Cities," a digital project centered on the theme of "urban starry skies." This series of digital photographs expresses a virtual reality, exploring what cityscapes would look like if the lights were extinguished, given the increasing "light pollution" caused by urbanization.
For this project, Thierry Cohen traveled the world, beginning his shoots in major cities like New York, Paris, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. He meticulously records the time, angle, latitude, and longitude of each photograph. Then, based on the Earth's rotation, he visits locations where stars are clearly visible. He captured images of the night sky in pristine, clear-aired spots far from light pollution, such as the Mojave and Sahara deserts. Using the data recorded from his city shoots, he photographs the starry sky from the same angle. The final artworks are created by compositing the urban and celestial images, a process that involves a lengthy production cycle.
Due to light pollution, the night sky in our cities is constantly brightened, obscuring the stars that should be visible to the naked eye. Through his photography, Thierry Cohen reminds us of the captivating beauty of the stars.
