Diverse Works Across Photography, 16mm Film, and Sculpture

Born in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1977, Elad Lassry is an artist currently based in Los Angeles who has garnered international attention. This inaugural exhibition in Japan showcases his work in photography, 16mm film, and sculptural installations. Driven by his own history and a critical engagement with formalism, the exhibition probes and explores the nature of "images" within contemporary visual culture.

For instance, in his photographic works featuring motifs such as people, animals, and everyday objects, the use of garishly colored backgrounds pulls the subjects away from their original context, creating a sense of imbalance. This unsettling dissonance is further amplified by vibrant colors, multiple exposures, and motion blur. Lassry himself describes these works as "irritating images," commenting that they "distort perception and shake the stability with which we receive visual information and understand the world." They never allow the viewer to settle, instead prompting questions about the material and immaterial aspects of experiencing art.

Also on display is an object resembling a wooden bed, suggesting a frame. This work, too small to be called a bed, is adorned with vivid green and four crosses, further detaching it from reality. This piece, which cannot be reduced to mere function, symbolism, or even painterly qualities, also questions the very existence of art, much like his other works.

Elad Lassry's exhibition creates a tension between image and object, raising questions that transcend genre. We invite you to engage in a stimulating dialogue with these captivating works, whose inherent instability draws the viewer in.
