Jack Goldstein Exhibition
Shaping Early Postmodern Art
Jack Goldstein's First Exhibition in Japan
Jack Goldstein (1945-2003) defined the early stages of postmodernism with his works from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. His first exhibition in Japan will be held from Wednesday, January 25, to Sunday, March 25, at RAT HOLE GALLERY in Aoyama, Tokyo.

Jack Goldstein, one of the "Picture Generation" artists who brought about a paradigm shift in art focused on the critique of representation, continues to influence many artists today. A versatile artist who excelled in performance, film, painting, and sound works, he can be considered a standard-bearer of postmodernism who brought fresh perspectives to art values.
Born in Montreal, Canada, in 1945, Goldstein studied at the California Institute of the Arts. While he initially created minimalist sculptures early in his career, he soon transitioned his artistic practice to performance and film.

From 1973, while living in Los Angeles, he began creating color film works using special effects, collaborating with professional technicians from the entertainment industry and commercial film sector. His work "The Jump" (1978), a 26-second loop film projected onto a red-painted screen, which will also be exhibited this time, continues to hold significant presence, having been screened at a special exhibition at the Venice Biennale last year.
This exhibition will screen his record works and 10 short 16mm films, including "The Jump," "MGM," and "Some Butterflies." We invite you to experience the essence of Goldstein's oeuvre, which rapidly evolved from minimalism to new values and postmodernism.
