In 2015, I'll Challenge Myself with Things I Dislike! (1)

The cherry blossom season has ended, and already a third of the year is about to pass. Time flies, doesn't it? It's been a while since I last wrote for OPENERS, so I'm picking up my pen after a long break. Many things have happened in the meantime, but let's start with my trip to the Netherlands last year.

To the Netherlands, a Place I've Dreamed of Since Childhood!

Last October, I visited the Netherlands for the first time in my life for the 'Cinekid' film festival. It was the country I always mentioned first when asked where I wanted to go as a child. The reason? Simply because I love tulips (laughs). Unfortunately, I couldn't visit the famous parks in full bloom this time. It was far, and more importantly, I was there for work.

I watched several films at the Dutch cinema (Cinekid), mingled with the local staff, and was invited to a workshop where I spent time with children. Kun, the lead actor from the film 'Bram' who visited the film festival in Japan last year, also participated. It was a happy reunion. The scale of the film festival was immense and incredibly warm. I felt so happy. Green bags were distributed to us containing materials. Each bag had a drawing by a child, and there was a system to send a message to that child. Such a thoughtful gesture.

The famous Dutch croquettes are long and cylindrical. Bridges over the canals that run through the city were adorned with flowers; it was simply beautiful. On the last day, I tried to visit the nearby famous spot, 'Rijksmuseum' and the Anne Frank House, but the line for the Anne Frank House was incredibly long. I didn't have time and had to give up. I at least tried to capture the atmosphere with chocolate. My heartfelt thanks to everyone who served as my interpreter in the Netherlands.

From Trio Comedy to Grand Stage Productions: Days Dedicated to Acting

And in October last year, a new regular variety show began in my hometown of Nagoya. It's 'The Kiroba Keiko,' produced by Me-Tele. With the subtitle 'Nagoya Deep Dive Variety,' it truly delves into Nagoya, or rather, the Tokai region. Yamazaki-kun, Robert, and I have become good friends, and we're enjoying the show. We're discovering new aspects of Nagoya while laughing and eating delicious food on the program.

Last year, my only stage work was 'Kira Desu Nanka?' at the end of the year. It was a Koki Mitani production after a long time, and a performance celebrating the 77th birthday of my beloved Shiro Ito. Naturally, it was incredibly fun. My role was Shima, a bento shop owner, who is also the lover of Kira, played by Ito-san. A 'lover'! I was initially told I'd be playing his daughter (laughs). But thanks to that, I had plenty of scenes with Ito-san, which I truly enjoyed and learned a great deal from.

This year, 2015, my first stage production is 'Wuthering Heights,' for which rehearsals are currently in full swing. Press conferences have already been held, and I'm keenly aware of what a major production it is. To be honest, 'Wuthering Heights' isn't a work I particularly like. Perhaps I'm not suited for such famous, grand works.

It's something to be watched, not performed. My mind might be more suited for comedy than tragedy (laughs). That was my feeling, but... it's a deliberate challenge! Trying something I dislike, perhaps for the first and last time (laughs).

Maki Horikita, with whom I co-starred in a drama, plays Catherine, and my good friend Koji Yamamoto plays Heathcliff. The theater is the Nissei Theatre, a venue I've never performed in before. There's a reason I say 'that' Nissei Theatre. It's where I once watched the concert of the legendary Fujie Kojima, whom I admired. In my acting career, there are still many theaters I haven't had the chance to work in. So, I'm very happy to be performing at the Nissei Theatre. I want to experience its history firsthand.
