Your Luck Improves the More You Do What You Want?
ItoYou're active in so many areas, from producing cafes and hotels to fashion, music, and recently, offices. What led you to your current work?
NakamuraRight after graduating from university, I joined Isetan and worked as a buyer's assistant. When deciding on a career, I had always hosted parties by renting out clubs since I was a student, so I considered that path. However, I wanted to become an assistant to Yukio Fujimaki, a buyer at Isetan. I did become his assistant, but the fashion world moves incredibly fast, and I realized it might not be the right fit for me. So, I consulted with Mr. Fujimaki, and he told me, 'Legally, you won't be fired, so you can continue as an assistant while doing what you love.' I told him I wanted to host parties. This was because while assisting Mr. Fujimaki, I met many people and received numerous proposals, accumulating a large stack of business cards. But many of these connections ended after the initial meeting, which felt like a waste. So, I proposed hosting parties every Friday where everyone could be invited at once. Mr. Fujimaki agreed. As I found more enjoyment in this side venture, my work also became more enjoyable. Then, one day, Mr. Fujimaki decided to leave. I already had a strong sense of independence, so when I considered leaving to pursue something else, cafes were trending at the time. It was about nine years ago.
ItoThat was at the beginning of the cafe boom, wasn't it?
NakamuraYes. I felt the timing was right. At the time, the warehouse of my parents' trattoria was on the fifth floor of an old building in Gaienmae, and I thought I could renovate it into a shop. It could have been a bar or anything else, but calling it a cafe was the most talked-about thing nine years ago, so my parents' company created a cafe called 'OFFICE.' It became a huge sensation and a great success.
