Lessons in Inheriting a 260-Year-Old Legacy (1)

What are the daily lives and thoughts of those who have achieved success in business? In the series "Secrets behind the Success," we delve into the private lives of successful individuals, rarely seen by the public, through interviews.

Vacheron Constantin, a prestigious watch brand, was founded in 1755. As the world's oldest watch brand, it will celebrate its 260th anniversary next year, in 2015. The CEO of this brand, Juan-Carlos Torres, visited Japan for the opening of the Ginza boutique. We explore the philosophy of the leader guiding this venerable luxury watch brand to success.

A Watch Enthusiast Meets a Historic Brand

How often do you visit Japan?

I've been to Japan more than 15 times. This visit was for the opening of the Ginza boutique and for business inspections. It averages out to about once a year. No other country understands our brand as deeply as Japan does.

As the representative of Vacheron Constantin, I spend over 200 days a year outside of Switzerland. The time spent interacting with people worldwide is invaluable, and it even sparks ideas for new products.

What are your impressions of Japan?

At Vacheron Constantin, we meticulously craft our timepieces, from the details to the form, based on the brand's concept. Compared to other countries, Japan has many people who appreciate the subtle philosophy and concepts behind our models. Perhaps it's because so many people here harbor a hidden passion. I believe Japan is a true connoisseur of our craftsmanship.

What watch do you usually wear?

Of course, I wear a Vacheron Constantin (laughs). This particular watch is actually one-of-a-kind. I joined Vacheron Constantin in 1981, working in accounting at the time. I loved watches, so after work, I would often chat with the watchmakers over delicious Swiss wine and cheese, discussing timepieces.

Thirty years passed, and many watch technicians retired or left Vacheron Constantin. Then one day, I was called to the third floor of the head office, where many people had gathered. Among them were familiar faces with whom I had shared wine years ago. There, I was presented with this watch, along with the words, "Congratulations on becoming CEO."

The rotor on the back was engraved with the flag of Geneva, Switzerland, and the flag of my homeland, Barcelona, Spain. I later learned that even artisans who had already retired, working outside of their official hours, had painstakingly crafted this watch.

The Most Important Thing Is 'Humility'

What do you believe are the secrets to business success?

I am not a successful person. I simply exist as an emissary for watchmakers and those who love watches. However, there is one thing I always strive for: 'humility' and 'understanding the responsibility entrusted to me.'

While I am indeed the CEO of Vacheron Constantin, my presence is minuscule compared to the brand's 260-year history. Our watches will likely endure as antiques for another 100 years, but my own existence will be forgotten. Therefore, I believe it is essential to remain 'humble' and dedicate myself to our customers and the brand.

There is a French proverb that says, "It is better to have long legs than a big head." I believe it is crucial to stay grounded and objectively "understand the responsibility entrusted to me," rather than merely engaging in abstract thought.

Specifically, what should one do?

It is important to always have an open ear. I often conduct interviews with media from around the world, and sometimes I receive unexpected questions. It's easy to dismiss them, but I see them as opportunities to hear new perspectives. By valuing each of these voices, and ultimately making my own decisions, I believe is the best approach.

In business, I don't just rely on research data from trendy marketing firms. I also consistently seek opinions from our watchmakers. Of course, I consult them on technical aspects of new products, but I also ask for their input on new advertising strategies. These may seem like small opinions, but even with the difference in perspective between technicians and customers, I value them as the precious insights of people who love watches.

When do you feel most relaxed?

I have a villa in the South of France, and spending time there alone is truly blissful. I enjoy wine and a cigar while leisurely reading a book in my garden, surrounded by nature. That's how I spend the first half of my vacation. For the latter half, I shop for ingredients at the local village market and then invite friends over to enjoy meals I've prepared.

Since I spend so much time abroad for business, spending unhurried, private time with family and friends is an unparalleled luxury.

What are your aspirations for the future?

2015 looks to be an even busier year than usual. We have numerous events and new product releases planned as we approach our 260th anniversary. First, there will be the unveiling of new creations at SIHH in 2015. On our founding day, September 17th, we are planning a grand party. Unfortunately, it will be an internal celebration for our employees, so the public will not be able to attend. I want to share reflections on the past, present, and future with the colleagues who have worked so hard for us.
