November 9: Launch of "WiLL" Eco-Coffin Made from Thinned Wood
Triwall, which released the eco-friendly coffin "Noah" in the fall of 2006, has collaborated with "more trees," an organization promoting forest restoration activities in Japan and abroad. Together, they are launching the "WiLL" eco-coffin, designed to beautify forests, on November 9 (Monday).
A Coffin for a New Era, Including "Offset Costs" and "Forestry Donations"
The average Japanese cremation uses about 70 liters of kerosene per person, emitting approximately 200kg of CO2. The "WiLL" eco-coffin comes with a certificate of carbon offset for this amount.
The "WiLL" eco-coffin is constructed using laminated cypress wood sourced from "more trees' forest" in the Shimanto River basin, Kochi Prefecture, an area supported by more trees. This wood, obtained through forest management practices like thinning, is combined with Triwall's eco-friendly core material, a characteristic of eco-coffins. This innovative new product achieves both lightweight construction and strength, while simultaneously promoting the effective utilization of forest resources, reducing combustion time, and saving energy.
Fitting for its role as a vessel that lovingly embraces the departed, the coffin boasts an exquisite design.
The beautifully crafted large opening, the distinctive slope of the lid, the elegant curves on the sides, the smooth touch achieved through meticulous chamfering, and the use of plant-derived, biodegradable acetate for the interior lining—every detail, from the manufacturing process to the finish, has been refined with the care one would give to fine furniture, enhancing the solemnity of the funeral.
In Japan, over one million people pass away annually, yet coffins made from domestic timber account for less than 10% of the market. The cypress from the Shimanto River basin, grown in a rich environment, is of excellent quality and possesses a refined fragrance. By processing thinned wood, traditionally considered difficult to use, into laminated lumber, the forests become brighter and healthier.
