About the M.Y. LABEL Shop (Part 1)

What I Really Wanted: A Large Drawer

Including interviews, this series now exceeds 25 installments, yet I haven't properly introduced the shop that opened in April 2006. In fact, the products featured in this series are often photographed in and around the shop.
So, this time, I'd like to talk about the 'M.Y. LABEL' shop, designed by my friend Masamichi Katayama of Wonderwall, who is active on the global stage.

We Had an Instant Connection

I first learned about Masamichi Katayama about four or five years ago. I read an interview in a magazine and was struck by the phrase, 'This guy is interesting!' Soon after, I met him through a mutual acquaintance. Despite it being our first meeting, it took only a few minutes for us to understand each other. Our conversation flowed so well that I impulsively commissioned him to design my shop, should I ever open one. Looking back, it was a bold statement, but the right choice. And sooner than I expected, that time arrived.

A Large Drawer, the Shop's Symbol

The only specific design element I requested was a large drawer, which serves as the shop's symbol. This is because I'm deeply fond of the drawers at 'G. Lorenzi,' my beloved shop in Milan, Italy.

'Lorenzi' is a long-established cutlery shop on Via Montenapoleone. It boasts an impressive lineup, offering everything with a 'blade'—from everyday scissors to cheese slicers, cigar cutters, and even nose hair trimmers. The ground floor features a double-layered glass display, akin to a library, packed with merchandise. Though perhaps not widely known, the historic basement floor houses a bespoke salon with a counter featuring large drawers. For me, this room is a treasure trove.

When the owner pulls out a drawer and places it on the counter, it reveals a collection of exquisite items crafted by artisans. For someone like me who appreciates fine objects, this alone is enough to make my mouth water. If I have further specific requests, the owner will bring out another large drawer, subtly engaging in conversation—sometimes sharing professional insights—to skillfully discern my desires.
The way the drawers are presented one by one is a rather clever touch. It makes me wonder, 'What will come out next?' I find myself eagerly anticipating each reveal, completely captivated by this method.

And so, I resolved that if I were ever to have my own shop, it would feature large drawers like those at 'Lorenzi,' offering customers the same sense of excitement when choosing their desired items.
