Part 2: The Difference Between Art and Design
Part 2: The Difference Between Art and Design

Design: Form Born from Constraints
What is the difference between art and design? I believe the decisive factor lies in the presence or absence of constraints. Artistic expression is free; whether one paints on a canvas or dances naked in the street, it is up to the artist. On the other hand, if product designers all did as they pleased, society wouldn't function. When designing a cup, one must naturally consider a design without holes, and it's better if it holds water efficiently. If we consider selling it in a supermarket, we can't indulge in using ultra-luxury materials; the price must be kept reasonable. Thus, product design involves various constraints, and a certain form is predetermined. Designers must consider a comfortable and usable form after clearing these constraints.
Product Design Reflected in Eyewear
Now, I've gone on a rather serious tangent, but ultimately, I'll be speaking freely about things I like, so please bear with me. The glasses in the photo are Robert Marc acetate frames I bought in New York about four years ago. I own a few other pairs, but I only wear these now. Some of you might wonder, 'What's so great about them?' but I love their distinctly eyewear-like appearance. Yet, they also carry a certain modern flair.
Applying the earlier discussion of constraints to eyewear, the constraints for glasses would be that they must allow clear vision and be comfortable to wear. Perhaps 'constraints' can be rephrased as 'essence.' While appearance is certainly important, it's crucial that it aligns with the essence of eyewear; a mere whim of a design can never result in a comfortable form. If I may offer a slight jab at the current eyewear industry, there are too many unnecessarily decorative glasses, asking, 'What is the meaning of that embellishment?' They're like the CD players from the late bubble era that never harmonized with any room they were placed in. This reality feels like the result of designers' egos striving to leave their mark. However, I also feel that we might soon return to our origins. Will this prediction come true? Just the ramblings of an outsider.
