World-Renowned Artists Gather in Japan
Continuing from the event held since 2002,"Dance Triennale Tokyo"this autumn sees the birth of "Dance New Air." Artists from diverse backgrounds and facing varied realities worldwide will converge, connecting freely to present creative performances.
Of the eight works to be performed at the main venues, Aoyama Round Theater and Spiral Hall, three will be world premieres. Notably, "The Red Shoes," a collaborative piece by contemporary artist Nicolas Buffe, who recently held an exhibition at the Tomio Koyama Gallery until the end of June, director Shuji Onodera, and actor Hairi Katagiri, which crosses the boundaries of art, dance, and theater, is already generating significant anticipation.
Furthermore, Ikuyo Kuroda, active based in Belgium, will present a homecoming performance. "Dansu," a world premiere by Mirai Moriyama, who is currently in Israel and Belgium as a Japanese government overseas cultural ambassador and is also active as an actor, Shintaro Oue, based in Sweden, and Shintaro Hirahara, who has just returned from Spain after a six-month Agency for Cultural Affairs fellowship, is also expected to be a major talking point.
A host of world-class dancers and choreographers will also assemble. From abroad, Paul-André Fortier, a pioneer of contemporary dance based in Quebec, Canada, will return to Japan for the first time in eight years. He will present his choreographed work "15×AT NIGHT" every night for 15 days on the streets of Aoyama.
Additionally, a highly anticipated piece by François Chaignaud and Cecilia Bengolea, exploring various club dance styles with two DJs, will be showcased. During the festival, workshops will also be held by Claudia La Rocco, a dance critic and poet known for her work in The New York Times.
Dance, an art form that predates language and has expanded globally in its pursuit of expressive possibilities, is something we can experience now and in the future in Aoyama, a district where art and daily life intertwine.
