Live & Sound Space "SOUND MUSEUM VISION"

This autumn, "SOUND MUSEUM VISION," a live & sound space, will open in Shibuya's Dogenzaka. Spread across four floors in the building's basement, with six bar counters and an adjacent gallery, this cultural space in Shibuya is poised to become Tokyo's new music hub. Its astonishing sound system, designed specifically for this space, and its interior design that leverages the raw architecture to evoke infinite possibilities. Here, youth culture centered around music—art, fashion, performance, and visuals—will organically blend to create new culture. The Grand Opening Party on Friday, October 28th, will feature a gathering of Japan's leading DJs and live artists, proposing a new standard for Tokyo.

During his busy pre-opening schedule, Daizo Murata, the originator and producer, joined us on the program for an in-depth conversation.

──Why did you decide to create this kind of music space in Shibuya?

I believe Tokyo is a special place within Japan. Shibuya, in particular, is a place with strong energy where young people gather and strive to create new culture. By establishing a new, stimulating venue here, I wanted to create a place where energy converges, capable of sparking new musical movements.

A Place Where Energy Converges, Capable of Sparking New Musical Movements

──The concept is about "a place to hear live sound," isn't it?

Since the Lehman Shock and the earthquake, not only the music industry but also the fashion and food industries, among others, have not been in a state of economic growth. Against this backdrop, there's a growing trend to create "commercially viable products" rather than "quality products." Similarly, in music, rather than investing time and money to create music using live instruments and gathering great musicians, many are now producing music with personal equipment in small studios. I feel that "stimulation" is being emphasized over "emotion."

Toshio Matsuura | from TOKYO MOON October 23 ON AIR 02

While that in itself is not necessarily bad, I believe we need to prioritize "emotion" over "stimulation." If we don't present music with a depth that resonates emotionally, the future of the music scene may shrink. With that in mind, I established "SOUND MUSEUM VISION" with the concept of conveying the "emotion" inherent in live music.

The Best Sound System Imaginable

──"SOUND MUSEUM VISION" features an unprecedented sound system, correct?

It's something you really have to come and hear to fully appreciate, but what I can say is that compared to current PA systems designed with cost-performance in mind, both for sound production and live performance environments, we've incorporated a sound system that disregards such considerations. We've selected what we believe to be the best possible options available today, so I truly hope you'll come and experience it firsthand.

──The space is divided into several floors. What was the intention behind distributing content across different areas?

Many venues that have opened in the last decade focus on a single concept or a primary musical genre. A lot of events and parties are organized around a shared musical sensibility. However, music encompasses numerous scenes, and diverse genres have been born across different eras and places, intermingling to create the music we have today.

Therefore, I wanted to create a place where people, especially younger individuals seeking new sounds, can experience a wide range of music. The idea is that someone might visit, discover a DJ or artist they'd never heard of, encounter music they've never listened to before, and through that, become deeply immersed in new music. I wanted it to be a space like that. As the name "SOUND MUSEUM" suggests, we've created diverse spaces to allow many people to discover the unique brilliance of various genres of music.

We Want People Who Love Sound to Visit

──The opening is finally here this week. What kind of lineup do you have planned for the future?

First, for the opening on the 28th (Friday), we've gathered leading DJs from Japan. This opening party is less for the audience and more for the artists who will participate going forward. We hope they'll experience VISION firsthand and build upon it. Following that, we have events planned with Tommy Guerrero's visit to Japan, as well as "Live Sound Jazz" curated by you, Matsuura-san, and Okino-san.

──In one word, what is "SOUND MUSEUM VISION" to you, Murata-san?

It's a place where people who love sound can come. A place where they can feel music with their bodies, meet various people, and enjoy themselves – a space for such interaction.

──Then, what is music?

In Japanese, "music" (音楽) is written with characters that mean "enjoying sound." It's exactly that. Especially the sound system in the "GAIA" floor, I believe it will allow people to truly feel that.

──Thank you very much.
