Diary-T 137: To Serve.

What kind of joke is this, anyway?

A literary essay that savors the "stagnation of reading" by dissecting a short novel, finished in just about an hour, over more than 11 years. From Amazon's content description.

"Slow Reading: A Wonderful Dawdling Around Yoshimitsu Hirakomachi's 'The Machine'" by Akio Miyazawa

I was caught off guard. Akio Miyazawa's ultimate comedic genius is here. Surprise! ~
That phrasing is a bit much~, *potachin*! I should stop. So,
Though I consider myself to have read about 77% of Akio Miyazawa's works, even among his books that make you laugh out loud, I believe this one is easily the pinnacle.
Thinking back, Miyazawa's world of humor, which made me double over with laughter in "The Road to the Cow" long ago, remains unmatched for me.
If I had to say, I've also been made to laugh recently by Hidenori Takahashi of "Mechanical Democracy" and "Who Are Our Ancestors?"...
In other words, perhaps I could describe this kind of empty laughter as the kind that builds up small river stones one by one, meticulously, only to have them tumble down at the crucial moment. Or maybe only those who understand will get it... which is to say, there's not a shred of intention to make people laugh.
It's the composure, or perhaps the fear, of an adult who meticulously prepares the groundwork... it's a bit distant. It's like the feeling of watching, in a daze, a novice monk diligently mopping a long temple corridor, only to disappear at the far end. That's also revealed too much of the intention. Hmm, first, without thinking, depict a person with all your might. Pile up the facts relentlessly. Dig thoroughly and persistently behind the scenes of your research. Then, faced with that immense mass, ponder it to your heart's content. Those who think and think and think will, unintentionally, bring forth laughter. Phew. That's it.
Akio Miyazawa and Hidenori Takahashi are, as far as I know, the writers who produce the most sophisticated humor today.
