The Musical "Carry My Heart" Opens (Part 1)
The Musical "Carry My Heart"—Originally staged off-Broadway in 1978, this work premiered in Japan in 1981 under the title "Tabidate Onnatachi" (Depart, Girls!), starring Izumi Yukimura. I was part of the original cast, playing Cheryl, a chorus girl. As a young woman who barely understood the basics of musicals, let alone theater, I was deeply inspired by the chance to perform alongside the great star Izumi Yukimura, captivated by her exceptional singing, mature charm, and friendly personality. The fact that this was a backstage musical, performed with a small cast, and featured rich, beautiful music… all of it, along with Ms. Yukimura’s allure, fueled my admiration for the work itself.

My youthful infatuation with the show is long gone; now, it's all about survival!
Years flew by with the fervent wish, "I want to become an actress who can one day perform in a show like this!"—Then, a few years ago, during a reunion on an NHK music program, the topic of this musical came up with Izumi Yukimura, and she said, "Why don't you do it now?" It was a moment of revelation. If I can do it, I must! But who decides if I *can* do it? Who can tell me if I'm right for this role? I had no way of knowing.
But life is only lived once. Having long surpassed Ms. Yukimura's age from the original production, I tentatively raised my hand. To my surprise, the producer from the anniversary concert "Actresses" grabbed hold of my offer—or rather, I got caught up in it (laughs).

My youthful infatuation with the show is long gone; now, it's all about survival! I had long hoped that Koki Mitani, who excels at original works, would handle the Japanese adaptation. Despite this rather extravagant request, it was approved! Furthermore, G2, recommended by Mr. Mitani, took on the direction, and Ken Ishiguro joined as the manager Joe! These are busy individuals, yet heaven seemed to be on my side. Their schedules miraculously aligned, fitting perfectly into the narrow window of opportunity!
Mr. Mitani always says the most amusing things. G2 and I are working together for the first time, but I didn't hesitate to approach him, much like Mr. Mitani did (laughs). Incidentally, this is also my first time working with G2. I've known Ken Ishiguro for a long time from the drama "Shomuni," but I never imagined him on stage. Mr. Mitani's boundless creativity is truly a blessing.

Their Presence Transformed the Rehearsal Space
I was truly impressed by Mr. Mitani's intuition. G2, perhaps naturally, possesses a deep understanding of music, fitting for a musical director, and is both sincere and gentlemanly (laughs). His direction was meticulous and highly sophisticated. Ken Ishiguro, like G2, is sincere and gentlemanly. The moment he appeared, a refreshing breeze seemed to sweep across the stage (laughs). Seeing him up close, exchanging lines on stage, I realized what a truly fine man he is (laughs).
Now, let me introduce the rest of the cast. Kanako Irie and Kaori Aso as the chorus girls. In my mind, these two were always the perfect choice for the chorus girls! They are now indispensable figures in the musical world. They are powerhouses, excelling in singing, dancing, and acting! Back in 1981, due to my own shortcomings, I felt I was too unreliable a chorus girl to support Izumi Yukimura's character, Heather. I felt I should have had the strength to be a better supporting castmate… (cries). But this time, it's alright! These two are the strongest chorus girls.
And as Jake, we have "Brother GO," Takeshi Ueki. This is our first time working together on stage outside of live performances since our meeting in the 2006 production "HUMANITY."
For this role, Jake must also function as a band member, a demanding task I've imposed on GO (laughs). However, I wanted him to bring vibrancy to the stage with his dancing, and I also hoped that by working closely together again, we could learn more about acting and stagecraft.
Additionally, having more common ground will make it easier to grasp the overall image when working together on things like BG brand collaborations. This time too, I designed staff T-shirts and hoodies by Brother GO and presented them to everyone.
During rehearsals, backstage, and of course, on stage during performances, their presence alone made the rehearsal space feel different. It felt like home from the start—they provided strong support.
This is my first time performing at the Aoyama Round Theater, and I'm gradually getting used to the close connection with the audience. When I hear people laugh, cry, and especially say, "I gained strength from this," I, too, gain strength! Overall, it's been a resounding success. Thanks to everyone's help, the Tokyo run of "Carry My Heart" has successfully concluded. I'm eagerly looking forward to the performances in Osaka!
