Our ninth guest is the floral artist Nicolai Bergmann. He is one of Japan's most renowned floral artists, inspiring many with his unique worldview that fuses the sensibility honed in Denmark with Japanese culture. In this second part, we delve into Nicolai's past lives.
An Artist Through and Through, Even in Past Lives
ItoNicolai, when something truly resonates with you, you become incredibly stoic, focusing so intensely that you seem to lose sight of everything else and immerse yourself completely in that world, don't you?
NicolaiThat's right. When I start creating, I have a clear image of the finished piece, and I work towards that. Of course, as it's artwork, things can change along the way.
ItoYou are an artist at heart. In your past lives too, you were an artist, reincarnating multiple times. Currently, you strongly embody the essence of a sculptor, a painter of landscapes, or even an architect at times.
NicolaiI see.
ItoSo, the reason this life is about 'flowers' is because, in your past lives, you conveyed messages to people through art. However, with sculpture or painting, people have different preferences, don't they? But flowers – is there anyone who dislikes them? You were born into this life knowing that everyone feels a gentle sense of 'how beautiful' or 'how lovely' when they see flowers.
NicolaiMmm, yes.
ItoHumans and nature are meant to live in harmony, yet we often struggle to incorporate nature into our lives. We tend to lose the ability to appreciate nature's beauty or find solace in its power, leading to stress and anxieties that consume our time. But it doesn't have to be that way. By dedicating time and heart to the beauty of nature, we can experience such richness. Perhaps you wish to convey this message more intimately and realistically.

A Teacher Conveying the Beauty Created by Nature
ItoYour presence in Japan is also inevitable. You understand the unique Japanese culture of ikebana, the beauty of Western arrangements, and the collaboration between the two. From Japan, the center of the world, you can communicate the integration of flowers into daily life to people from various countries. Many people travel through Japan. For example, if someone who finds these flowers beautiful happens to be from Africa, you can then convey that Africa has such flowers and can create such arrangements. Your soul unconsciously chooses this exchange, making you a teacher conveying the beauty of nature to many.
NicolaiMy staff tells me I make decisions quickly and live by intuition.
ItoI can imagine. You possess an incredibly refined sensibility. Your ability to see the whole, analyze, make calm judgments, and decide is innate. Furthermore, your timing for taking action is exquisite. For everyone, light streams directly from the heavens to their feet. In my case, I see this light as color, but for you, it's like a prism of sparkling light, like flowers, pouring down. You have a strong ability to grasp what resonates with you from this light. Your antenna is always up in daily life, making everything a part of your life's work. Rather than achieving grand things, you are the type who has achieved great things by consistently pursuing what you love and want to do. Above all, you do it because you love it.
NicolaiThat's true. I feel lucky to be able to do what I love for a living. While my connection to nature led me to flowers, it's more than just a job. Flowers are integral to my life.
ItoYour soul itself is that of an artist. While you express yourself through flowers now, you are undoubtedly creating a new era. You have a natural leadership quality, which I believe allows you to pioneer unprecedented endeavors. By continuing this, by initiating things that have never been done before, you are a project leader in the sense of guiding the entire floral industry. And you are an incredibly diligent worker. Yet, your achievements are those of a pioneer of the times, which makes the contrast fascinating. You are truly a remarkable individual. Your energy captivates everyone you meet. However, you remain grounded, never presenting yourself as a star or someone on a pedestal.

Arranging Flowers in an Apple Orchard Since Childhood
NicolaiYou only see the good things, don't you? (laughs) Aren't there any bad points?
ItoI believe you are always warm and deeply value people. You dislike conflict and always approach interactions with a desire to enrich the time spent with those you meet. However, perhaps because you prioritize harmony and cooperation, you find it difficult to express your inner thoughts. It would be beneficial to practice sharing your inner feelings bit by bit with your staff, friends, and family. Also, having grown up in a natural environment, it would be good for you to visit places where you can feel the scent of the wind and the texture of the soil. This should help alleviate any unconscious pressure you might be putting on yourself.
NicolaiMaybe I should go to an apple orchard next time.
ItoPerhaps your grandfather... he is here now and wants to talk about the apple orchard. Did you also help out at the orchard? But I see an image of you not just picking apples, but creating something with them.
NicolaiYes, I did. I used to make arrangements with apples.
ItoI thought so. You were decorating them. Your grandfather was apparently looking forward to seeing what kind of adult you would become. Apples, you know, each have a different shape. So, even as a child, you were particular about the arrangement, and that left a strong impression on him, he tells me.
NicolaiYes, I always liked making things.
ItoYou have the power to transform your creations into richness in daily life. It's truly wonderful. It's not just about having flowers in your life, but about cherishing the time you can dedicate to them and the feelings they evoke. So, it's not just about 'beauty,' is it? I believe you are conveying a message to love and receive love itself.
