EVENT | "Most Influential International Journalist" Visits Japan

Held in Kyoto and Tokyo!

A Discussion on Media and Journalism

The discussion event "MEDIA FANTASY WORLDS," focusing on the gap between truth and reporting, and the issues within media and journalism, will be held on Friday, November 8th, in Kyoto, and on Monday, November 11th, in Tokyo's Shibaura. Joris Luyendijk, named one of the "40 Most Influential International Journalists" in the Netherlands, will visit Japan.

Joris Luyendijk

Born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, in 1971, Joris Luyendijk is a journalist for the British newspaper The Guardian. He spent six years in the Middle East as an anthropologist and news correspondent, and his book "So, How Does the World Really Work?"—a candid account of the mechanisms surrounding media—became a bestseller, translated into over 12 countries.

He is known for his energetic reporting, currently writing a series for The Guardian called "BANKING BLOG" that scrutinizes financial issues.

This event was conceived by SHIBAURA HOUSE, a community space established in Shibaura in 2011, designed for participants to take the lead in workshops involving discussions and creative activities. SHIBAURA HOUSE has invited Luyendijk to host talks and discussions focused on the issues of media and journalism.

The moderator for the Tokyo session will be Peter Barakan, a British-born freelance broadcaster. For the Kyoto session, Sakiko Sugawa, who manages "Social Kitchen," a space described as a "community center for the 21st century" in Kyoto, and is also involved in the 40-year project "In 40 years" addressing the Israel-Palestine issue, will serve as moderator, supporting the flow of discussion.

Applications can be made through the SHIBAURA HOUSE website. Are the news we see truly what is happening? And how should we, living in such a world, respond? Through discussions involving the sharp journalist and participants, we will contemplate "truth."
