Keiko Toda | First co-starring role with Masayuki Sakamoto of V6! Musical 'The Moon Reflected in a Silver Spoon'
Keiko Toda | First Co-starring with V6's Masayuki Sakamoto
Original Musical 'Moon Reflected in a Silver Spoon' (1)
In the original musical 'Moon Reflected in a Silver Spoon,' which ran from June 14th to 30th at the Tokyo Globe Theatre, I played a character who really let loose after a long time. I was fortunate to have wonderful co-stars, including my first collaboration with Masayuki Sakamoto of V6, an artist I've admired on stage for some time. Despite a tight schedule, it was a fulfilling production that allowed me to enjoy the unique pleasures of an original work.

First Co-starring with Everyone Except G2 and Kiyoko Ogino!
The first read-through for the original musical 'Moon Reflected in a Silver Spoon' took place on May 7th. The cast consisted of eight actors and two musicians, a lean and elite team. With the exception of writer and director G2 and composer Kiyoko Ogino, everyone else was a first-time collaborator.
Counting the rehearsal days, there were only 25 before opening on June 14th! This is quite a short period for an original musical. However, the script and musical numbers weren't ready on the first day of rehearsal, and so 'Moon Reflected in a Silver Spoon' began its journey at a leisurely pace.
Nevertheless, everyone's individual musical talent was exceptionally high, and the time from sight-reading to completion for each new song was remarkably fast! There were opportunities for ensemble singing and background vocals, unique to a small cast musical. While it was demanding, with solo songs as well as harmonies, I particularly enjoyed the harmonies, as I love music. It's incredibly satisfying when the pitch, timing, and dynamics perfectly align.
Even after moving from rehearsals to the theater, it was a team that truly valued good food. Food is important! I contributed homemade pickles and side dishes, and there were also contributions from others, as well as snacks and souvenirs. With hot meals available at the theater, I was thoroughly satisfied.
Director G2 had approached me quite some time ago about collaborating with Masayuki Sakamoto of V6. I had often attended Sakamoto-kun's stage performances, and if I may say so myself, I held a very high opinion of him as a performer. He's a great singer, and above all, he has excellent stage presence.
As expected, or rather, even more so than I imagined, Sakamoto-kun turned out to be an incredibly earnest and sincere person, diligently focusing on rehearsals every day. After the script was finalized, I realized that Sakamoto-kun and I had very few interactions. Later, Sakamoto-kun and I discussed it, saying, 'We should definitely have more scenes together next time.' But this time, on stage, I only ever saw Sakamoto-kun looking angry (laughs).

The Joy of Originals: Ad-libs and Changes to Musical Numbers!
My character, 'Ayatsuki Tsuruta,' is a concierge serving the Shijima family. She experiences a dramatic reunion with her daughter, whom she entrusted to her sister 30 years prior, and she even harbors romantic feelings for the master of the Shijima household, aiming for the position of wife. It's quite a busy character emotionally (laughs). I also played Miyuki, the ghost of the Shijima family's eldest daughter. You might not have noticed because there were few costume changes, but I changed outfits six times during the performance! This also involved ascending and descending stairs six times. On days with two shows, that's 12 trips up and down the stairs in one day! It's surprisingly demanding (laughs).
In the end, her flaws as a mother are revealed, but Ayatsuki remains determined to 'go her own way!' Overall, I feel it was a role where I could really let loose after a long time. Although I didn't use ad-libs during the actual performances, I tried many during rehearsals, and G2 incorporated a lot of them. This is also a hallmark of original works. Being able to change lyrics, switch singing parts, and do things that aren't possible in translated musicals felt incredibly luxurious. Or rather, it should be possible to do more of this in original productions... but it's quite difficult in Japan's current situation.
The performance schedule was demanding, with two shows every other day, but everyone maintained discipline and paid close attention to their physical condition. It may be obvious, but I felt they were true professionals. I am relieved that I was able to complete the run without any issues. While I still felt my own limitations, I gained a great deal of knowledge and hope to apply it to my next performance.
Thank you to everyone who came to the theater and to all who supported us.
