Overwhelming Vocal Power and Performance!

This time, I'll introduce an artist I love who will help cool us down this hot summer. Concha Buika, a female singer from Mallorca in the Balearic Islands, Spain, floating in the Mediterranean. Her fifth album, titled "La Noche Más Larga" (The Longest Night), carried an even deeper aroma of jazz than usual.

Buika, an Afro-Spanish singer with Guinean ancestry, grew up listening to the songs of the local Gitanos (Gypsies) and aspired to become a singer. This environment greatly influenced her Cante Jondo, a form of flamenco singing that expresses the pain of tragic love and the despair of life. Before her full solo debut in 2005, she also sang R&B and soul, creating her unique world where diverse cultures and music blend seamlessly.

Her musical world continues to expand through collaborations with accomplished musicians such as Jerry González, a leading figure in New York Latin jazz; Chucho Valdés, pianist for the Cuban Latin jazz super-band Irakere; and Pat Metheny on her latest work.

Her alternative sound infused with jazz and soul elements, her overwhelming vocal prowess with a husky voice unique to flamenco, and her rich emotional expression captivate listeners worldwide. I am one of them. Unfortunately, only her third album has been released in Japan, but you can obtain almost all her works through imported CDs or iTunes, so please give them a listen if you're interested.
