Organic Cosmetics That Nurture Forests
With a concept of "Connecting Cities and Forests," the forest conservation group more trees, which promotes sustainable forest and community development, launched its organic cosmetic line "more trees organic" in May 2012. The first products were a hand clean mist, a foot massage oil, and a body oil, with a portion of the proceeds supporting forest conservation activities. Here, we introduce the story behind the realization of this project.

A New Challenge Utilizing the Bounty of the Forest
Currently, regions in Japan whose primary industry is forestry often face challenges in utilizing their resources. In Kashiwamo, Gifu Prefecture, where "more trees' forests" are located, there were difficulties in developing sales channels for cypress essential oil. Meanwhile, in the Kochi Prefecture's Shimanto River basin, where many more trees products have been created, time had passed without fully leveraging the technology to produce essential oils from the peels of fruit used for juice.
Against this backdrop, an oil development project was initiated through collaboration between more trees, local communities, and corporations. The challenge to utilize the "bounty of the forest" that had been dormant in the region began in June 2011.
The Birth of "more trees organic"
After approximately one year, the cosmetic line "more trees organic" was completed. The first products announced were a hand clean mist, a foot massage oil, and a body oil.
The hand clean mist is weakly acidic and weakly alcoholic, cleansing the skin while retaining moisture. The foot massage oil offers a relaxing effect from cypress essential oil and features a light, smooth texture that spreads well even with a small amount. The body oil uses ponkan and yuzu, harvested from the Shimanto River basin in Kochi Prefecture, as fragrances.
Since its establishment, more trees has discovered new value in domestic timber and brought it to the market. The consistent theme underlying their activities is the creation of a cycle that supplies the "bounty of the forest" to urban areas and returns the proceeds to forests and communities. "more trees organic" can be seen as a product that utilizes and expands the possibilities of the diverse "bounty of the forest," extending beyond just timber.
