Tru Thoughts: A Leading British Independent Label


Sunday nights, a personal time spent with exquisite music, offer a moment of pure bliss for adults. This time is further enriched by DJ Toshio Matsuura's radio program, 'TOKYO MOON'.—Each Sunday, from 24:00, the program broadcasts a curated selection of wonderful music from around the world, along with topics for adults that stimulate intellectual curiosity, on Inter FM 76.1MHz. Here, we look back at the program that just aired each week. This week, we focus on Tru Thoughts, an independent label that has produced numerous talented artists.

It All Began in Brighton



Brighton, located in the southeast of England, is known as a seaside resort town. Tru Thoughts, an independent label, was founded in 1999 by Robert Luis and Paul Jonas, who developed a club event they were hosting in this city. The label continues to deliver high-quality soul, funk, jazz, and dance music, garnering a large fanbase worldwide.

Among the many talented artists nurtured by the label are UK soul singer Alice Russell, known for her strong musical curiosity spanning funk to Latin; Quantic, a solitary figure who continues to explore music deeply; and Nostalgia 77, representing the label's jazz side with a spiritual and folksy mood.

More recently, the label has seen an increase in releases from artists with a strong club sound, such as Mark de Clive-Lowe and Zed Bias, whom we featured previously, demonstrating its continued evolution.
