A Musical Journey Through Afro, Soul, and Funk
This time, the program was divided into three sections – "Afro," "Soul/R&B," and "Disco Funk/Jazz Funk" – to present a collection of heartwarming melodies to cherish as autumn deepens.
First, we introduced Bucky Leo, a saxophonist from Lagos, Nigeria, who was discovered by Tony Allen, a drummer who collaborated with Afro master Fela Kuti, and later became active in London. Following him, we presented Afro-funk from the six-piece band Saturday Player Meeting, based in Morioka, Tohoku.
Next, we featured a track from the German group Jazzanova, who garnered attention this year for their first live recording, "Funkhaus Studio Sessions." We then played a re-arranged version of "Ordinary Guy" by "King of Latin Soul," Joe Bataan, likely an extension of that project. Finally, we introduced a wonderful track from the New Zealand neo-soul unit Funkommunity, with its vintage-feeling vocals and arrangement.

Newban 『Newban and Newban 2』
In the latter half, we presented unreleased 70s tracks from Newban, the precursor to the soul group Atlantic Starr, known for their success in the pop field. We also featured a dance mix with a comfortable groove from a 21st-century jazz-funk fusion album, created by four accomplished London producers including 4Hero's Dego and Kaidi Tatham.

A Night to Experience a Dazzling World of Sound

Improvisation. A word derived from the concept of spontaneity. In music (especially jazz) and theater, it refers to "entertainment that progresses by accepting what happens in the moment without prior arrangement." The party I, Matsuura, organize, named "impro" and started in March 2008, will be held for the 9th time.
The live guest will be KINGDOM☆AFROCKS, Japan's premier Afro-beat band, who just released their new album in June. The guest DJ is TOSHIYUKI GOTO, a craftsman with over 20 years of experience, known for rocking floors with his wide-ranging selections across genres. The lounge floor will also feature skilled DJs, each showcasing their unique improvisations. The regular DJs are also fully prepared. It promises to be a night where attendees can personally experience a dazzling world of sound.
