EVENT: Experience Live Sci-Fi

Performance Art of "Substitutional Reality (SR)"

The keyword "Substitutional Reality (SR)," often featured in sci-fi films like "The Matrix" and "Inception," is now the basis for a new performance art utilizing cutting-edge technology that blurs the line between virtual and real. This groundbreaking experience will be unveiled at the National Museum of Nature and Science.

A Dangerous Technology That Erases the Boundary Between Reality and Virtual Reality!?

The SR (Substitutional Reality) system uses a special headset, as seen in the top photo, to project specially recorded and edited video and audio, making it indistinguishable from real-time sights unfolding before your eyes. This technology creates a state where it's impossible to tell what is real and what is video.

The new interactive performance art, "MIRAGE," applies this technology in a completely novel way. It is a collaborative creation between the performance group "Grinder-man" and the RIKEN Center for Brain Science's Adaptive Intelligence Research Team. The headset, dubbed the "Alien Head," is designed by industrial designer Shunji Yamanaka.

Participants wearing the Alien Head will watch a dance performance lasting approximately 10 minutes through the SR system. The sights projected through the headset could be the dance happening live before them, or they could be pre-recorded and edited footage from the past. These two streams of imagery are woven together so seamlessly that distinguishing between them becomes impossible. The pre-recorded footage is captured in all directions by a panoramic camera and can be viewed freely, just like the real world, thanks to motion sensors.

At the National Museum of Nature and Science event, the visuals experienced by participants will also be projected onto a large screen, allowing viewing even without wearing the Alien Head. Witness a reality where the world of science fiction has been perfectly realized.
