A Sound Journey Through Old and New Soul and Funk

This episode began with Marvin Gaye’s massive hit “I Want You” (1976), followed by tracks from Leon Ware, an artist and producer who sings of sweet and sensual worlds in his own work. After jazz fusion veteran Deodato, we featured “Sweet Power Your Embrace” from James Mason’s jazz-funk masterpiece “Rhythm of Life,” recently reissued with unreleased mixes. This was followed by uplifting funkiness, a transition through current dubstep and UK funky, and concluded with a dynamic 30-minute sound journey featuring the fast-paced jazz fusion of jazz violinist Michael White.

cro-magnon and DJ LeFtO Appear!

At impro 7 this past February, Giles Peterson delivered an incredibly passionate, ultra-long set for eleven’s anniversary, a performance now spoken of in legend. The excitement from that event has barely subsided, and the eighth installment is already set for this weekend. This time, we welcome double guests: the “storm-calling trio” cro-magnon, who released their best-of album in April, and Belgium’s representative of Global Jazz Connection, DJ LeFtO. It’s sure to be a night more thrilling than ever. In the lounge floor, aptly named with deep meaning, accomplished DJs will gather to reboot the club jazz scene. On May 18th, a night to get lost in sound returns to Nishi-Azabu.
