Diary-T 246 Taiwan Dictionary: A Journey Through Taipei and Kaohsiung, Part 4
Words and Artwork by Shigekazu Kuwabara
My Asia is here.
Someday, someday,
Taiwan, which is friendly to Japan, has a Shinkansen. So, straight to Kaohsiung.
The luxurious and spectacular waterside restaurant is a thing of the past.
Taiwan Dictionary, launched July 10th
At that time, we will first hold a launch event in Kaohsiung.
TASM2012 after311 Rockin'Allow
It's a T-shirt exhibition.
Adding ten people from Taiwan to sixty people from Japan,
we will exhibit and sell works from a total of seventy people.
As sales in Japan have been postponed for a while,
we are thinking of making the one in Taiwan a success first.
And this event will also be held in Taipei in September.
If possible, in Shanghai and Hong Kong too.
Of course, with ART SCHOOL and Party.

Now, Kaohsiung, where the first exhibition will be held,
reminiscent of Yokohama's Red Brick Warehouse,
is planned to be held in a gallery district near the port.
On the day I visited, it was bustling with lovers and families.
However, hearing that it was being led by the administration,
I became a little uneasy. I remembered the ineffectiveness of Japanese local facilities, often called third sector, which are run by administrative bodies and have a flat, uninspired quality, like flat soda.
When it comes to redevelopment led by the administration, my now-white eyebrows bristle.

The issue is art. In the past, art was what was displayed in museums.
What kind of art is the government of Taiwan, which is now putting its efforts into art, focusing on?

I am inevitably drawn to things that are rusted, peeling, or decaying.
Is this a sense of kinship with my own decay?

Surely, this place must be connected to South America.
Because I can hear the steel pans.

Ah, I just remembered that I produced a radio program called "Pans from Heaven" on an FM station in Osaka in the past, with music selected by Yan Tomita. So, a small port where the sound of heavenly steel pans can be heard. It makes sense, as all ports connect to the world.
So what?
But I feel like I've seen this feeling somewhere before,
but why do ports make me feel so melancholic...
