A Masterpiece That Plumbs the Human Psyche and Rattles the Mind: 'SHAME'
On Sunday nights, a personal moment of quietude accompanied by sophisticated music is a sublime pleasure for adults. This time is further enriched by DJ Toshio Matsuura's radio program, 'TOKYO MOON'.—He presents a selection of wonderful music from around the world and intellectually stimulating topics for adults, airing every Sunday from 7 PM on Inter FM 76.1MHz. Here, we look back at the program broadcast each week. This week, we introduced the shocking film 'SHAME,' which delves deeply into the 'sexuality' inherent in everyone, a stark contrast to the pleasant music.

Carrying a Bright Mood Through Music

Gregory Porter『Be Good』
This week, I've infused music with the bright feelings from having successfully completed the "Tokyo Marathon 2012" the other day. The calm and soulful vocals of this jazz singer from Brooklyn, New York, seem to wish for the long-awaited arrival of spring.
Perhaps the emotional vocal performances from Cuban songs, created over half a century ago, and the romantic waltzes from the representative works of Gino Paoli, an Italian cantautore from the Genoa school, delivered a pleasant mood.

For Those With the "Courage" to Confront Themselves
This week, as a featured topic, I introduced the film 'SHAME,' which opens on March 10th. The director's name is Steve McQueen. The same name as the legendary actor. It's astonishing that this is only his second film. His method of deeply exploring the 'sexuality' that is never spoken of, which everyone possesses, and confronting us with it through the screen, is disorienting. I found myself drawn into an 'unreal' experience, feeling a searing, stinging pain as if my inner self were burning.—This is a film for adults, intended only for those who possess the "courage" to confront themselves.

A Man Who Spends All His Time Outside Work on Sex—
He browses adult websites and collects videos. He engages in one-night stands with both strangers and professionals. His name is Brandon. Though he is a capable employee valued by his superiors, he suffers from sex addiction, a modern societal illness. Yet, in his stylish apartment where he lives alone, the time he dedicated to diligently focusing on sex each day was, in a sense, a life of consistency.
The equilibrium of this established single life is shattered by the sudden arrival of his sister, Sissy. Brandon, who lives by suppressing emotions and seeking no emotional connection with others, and Sissy, who craves the love of others and lives as a bundle of passion. The two, existing at opposite poles, clash violently, their feelings misaligned, deepening their individual loneliness.
As if to vent his uncontrollable frustration towards his sister, you will feel an inexplicable sense of unease on a visceral level watching Brandon pursue only meaningless pleasure. This unease stems from what truly happened in the family that this brother and sister once belonged to—and from the fact that the reason Brandon seeks sex so desperately is never explained. What is the true "shame" that Brandon desperately hides, camouflaged by sex...?
When you can "feel" the unspoken "shame," you will have a rare experience unlike any other. You will glimpse the entirety of a man's life, someone you thought lived in a completely different world, in an instant. Moreover, you might even find yourself secretly empathizing. A resonance with the profound drama that eventually emerges beyond the realm of sex—This is the true impact of this film.
