Diary-T 221: The Mature Adult

Text and Artwork byKoichi Kuwabara

“A film has appeared that is astonishingly watchable.”

To be in constant flux is the essence of life. Within us, nobility and baseness, tolerance and narrow-mindedness, deliberation and rashness are intertwined and mixed. We strive to accept ourselves as such complex structures, to reconcile these elements, and to coexist. Traditionally, we have regarded those who skillfully navigate this flux as “mature adults.” Social systems, too, are no different from living organisms in this regard. To adapt to change, they must maintain a complex structure.

“Ah, I want to be an adult~”

Every time I read something by Tatsuru Uchida, I am struck by his rich vocabulary, and this time too, I was completely captivated by his groove.

Revitalized… does it read as ‘fukatsu’…

To invigorate; to activate the function or action of a substance.

The maturity of the Japanese media is low.
National newspapers selectively report only what is “proper,” “politically correct,” and “unassailable,” while television and weekly magazines selectively report only what is “trivial,” “best left unsaid,” or “likely to anger people.” The media’s work is “specialized.” This is leading to the media’s degradation, but the media creators are unaware of it.

Avoidance, in a broad sense, means disliking and staying away from something or a certain matter.

“Will I ever acquire this vocabulary?”

The downfall of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde lies in their avoidance of the difficult human task of coexisting intellect and animality, the suppression and liberation of desire, within a single person. They attempted to resolve their internal conflict through personality division into intellect and animality. He is punished because he refused the human obligation to reconcile the irreconcilable. Yet, only by undertaking this difficult obligation can one become human. It is a troublesome task. However, those who avoid this troublesome task are drawn into a pathological state called “dissociative identity disorder.” This is precisely what is happening with the media in our country. The media is experiencing dissociative identity disorder. Each dissociated personality is becoming purified, deformed, and beginning to acquire bizarre shapes and unnecessary functions that would be impossible in nature.

“It’s not that I’ve refused to become an adult until now.
It’s simply that I was uneducated.
Though it is deeply embarrassing, what is an adult?
I have lived until now without truly knowing.
This is the entirety of the cause.
Therefore, by following the context and thoughts of Tatsuru Uchida,
Perhaps I can move towards becoming an adult?
This thought makes me incredibly excited.”

“Detachment” refers to the stance of maintaining a certain distance from even the most disturbing events, and speaking about what they are, why they occurred, and how to deal with them in a calm, scientific manner. “Commitment” is the opposite. It is the stance of being emotionally disturbed by events, losing one’s sense of distance, empathizing with the suffering, sorrow, joy, and anger of others, becoming bewildered and flustered as a participant, despairing, and desperately seeking hope. Only a subject who can simultaneously fulfill these two tasks can clarify the nature of this chaotic world (even if only partially) with a lucid discourse and provide (even if only partially) ethical guidance on how people should behave within it.

“I see. ‘Detachment’ and ‘Commitment.’
Encountering such logical and beautiful writing clears the fog before my eyes, enveloping me in a refreshing sensation that invigorates me.
Moving towards becoming a mature adult, much like the joy of selecting music,
there is no definitive right way, but the process can sometimes bring moments of intense pleasure, like a bolt of lightning.
If possible, I too would like to become an adult, in the manner of a music curator.”
