According to psychologist Geoffrey Miller,
many of the most interesting and ostentatious aspects of human nature
evolved through sexual selection,
as a means of advertising one's value to others.
In other words, it's a way to flaunt one's fitness to reproduce, and Miller argues that this includes not only dance, but also many sports, artistic endeavors, and charitable activities.

For Miller, the brain is an "elaborate sexual ornament."

It occurs to me, quite suddenly,

this suddenness, this endless repetition of suddenness,

what is the self, exactly?

If my brain is constantly

urging and imposing upon me elaborate sexual ornamentation,

meaning, if I'm constantly on the lookout for attractive women and

ready to initiate sexual behavior at any opportunity,

then how many people are aware of this?

That's the question.

But most people, of course, have no such awareness from the outset,

so even if they did, perhaps,

my brain would act without my conscious consent.

In that case, where does the self reside?

And in this state of being, am I

truly alive?

In other words, encoded in my DNA,

this "elaborate sexual ornament,"

to what extent am I responsible for managing and styling it?

Can I not justify myself by saying, "I know nothing of such hungry wolf-like, drag queen costume-like sexual ornaments"?

How should I reconcile the self that doesn't know with the self that does?

Someone, please tell me.

This question is flawed;
independent thought is a mandatory requirement. In other words,
this might be the entrance to philosophy?
I tell myself, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. So,

what is the self?

What a delightful riddle, I try to tell myself.

Damn, I've fallen into the trap again.
