Diary-T 180 Smile Rock Again
smile rock again

A friend from thirty years ago, Seiji Nagai, has begun something new.
The scene at Fillmore West → Wonderland, hosted by Bill Graham—a mecca of the San Francisco rock scene and, at the time, the biggest driving force in American rock—is Nagai's root. This is a truly unprecedented, "rock" exhibition where Nagai will present his own artwork based on the vast collection of psychedelic posters he amassed while apprenticing under Bill Graham. It will begin soon.
Recently, a rally was held for everyone involved in this event.
Participants included Seiji Nagai, founder of DEPT,
and Sho Kobayashi, whose photo book "Smile Rock" is now said to be the bible for bikers.
photo book "Smile Rock".
And then there's MADSAKI, who has become so much more talented and substantial since we last saw him.
For the "Smile Rock" photo book, we collaborated on the compilation and track selection. When it comes to rock, it has to be Jun Sasaki, body and soul.
The freshly baked anpan from Levain, which Seiji and Sho pointed out lacked sweetness, might actually contribute to gatherings that tend to be tense. Is that really true? Sweet things are indeed important for communication... I've long admired Koda-san from Levain as a rock 'n' roll person. Anyway, so,
the "rock" we are presenting in this exhibition is
not ROCK in a nostalgic sense,
but a mission assigned to us living in Japan after 3.11.
"You all live at your own risk!" = So, we'll live rock 'n' roll?
AFTER 3.11 → Live at your own risk! = Live in the woods (the philosophy of the era when rock was born in America / they were called hippies)
That "rock" invented in America
is no longer just entertainment for us.
This is not an event to re-examine American counterculture,
but an exhibition confronting the philosophy of "rock" to truly understand and recognize the current state of our country, which is now thrust upon us.
In other words, it's not just for the month of the exhibition,
but this is where it all begins.
Yes. The Dictionary Club
will become a true art school.
Gather, think, act, and create together.
Together with the people participating in the Dictionary Club,
we will conceive and create philosophies, tools, and means for living.
As a truly live space,
smile rock again is about to begin.
Simply going because it looks interesting is not enough.
We want you to participate immediately.
This is not a place where things are given to you.
It is an art school
for you to create your own alternatives.
