I participated in a letterpress workshop, “First Steps in Type Casting.”

“Our biggest mission this time was for all participants to experience type casting themselves. This is because the cold metal type, usually stored in a type case, is only slightly warm when it’s freshly made. We wanted everyone to feel this with their own hands. – Yukiko Sawabe”

I was deeply impressed by Sawabe-san’s profound affection for type.

Her crisp, starched shirt and apron, chosen for their color and material, were worn with a traditional flair.
Her posture, with her back held straight, and her radiant smile and concise words exuded a sacred aura.

She seemed like an emissary of the type gods, or perhaps a shrine maiden of Japanese Shinto.

After all, this was a printing workshop, so it was permeated with the dull smell of oil and moisture.

It was not an elegant place.

Yet, what made the space feel so refined was undoubtedly her sacred devotion to type.

“Type is warm when it is born, warmed again by human hands when picked up, warmed again by human hands during typesetting, and warmed again while directly touching the plate during printing. Only then does printed matter come into being. – Yukiko Sawabe”

The casting machine’s movements, maintaining a steady rhythm like a musical beat,

and the momentary tension of synchronizing with the machine’s rhythm, evoked a solemnity akin to visiting a shrine.
